6. Here’s Me Starting My Story

Alright here’s me starting my story. I’ve done some pre-writing for story #1, so I’m just going to go based on that. I’m going to put the story part into quotes. Let’s see how this goes!

here's me starting my story // that text is on a piece of paper coming from a type writer; pieces of crumpled paper on the side and a teal background

Story #1 // Part 1

Ruth set down her suitcases in the worn-out entry. She looked at her husband, Alec, with questioning eyes. ‘This is it?’ she wanted to say.

They had decided to stay in Alec’s renovated family farm house until they found a place of their own. His dad had decided to renovate it ten years prior and his color palette must have been beige on beige. Possibly shades of tan found here and there. A good clean slate, Ruth supposed.

Ruth thought back to their old house, their first home they bought together. They were in their late twenties at the time, but still naive about all the word that went into home ownership.

Thankfully, Alec had a knack for fixing things, or making friends with professional fixers. Within the first two years, they had taken down all the wallpaper from the first floor (such a painstaking process they vowed to never put up wallpaper in any future home), painted all the walls, one accent wall in each room and painted the trim white. They also installed overhead lights in the living room and three bedrooms with the help of an electrician friend.

Ruth had obsessively taken up finding all the perfect pieces for the walls. She spent hours scrolling on her Target app to find items inexpensive enough for her college student salary, but seemed…adult.

She decided black frames with white matting were sophisticated (possibly) and that hanging pictures in a diagonal created intrigue and “drew the eye up.” Since they couldn’t afford the open concept demolition she had seen on every home improvement show at the time, other ways were found.

Okay I think I’m stopping for the day. I plopped my character in her situation, and started out with a flashback. I’m not wholly satisfied with this, but it’s a start.

About Amanda R. DeWitt

I'm a teacher, cat mom, wife to a bearded gentleman, and coffee junkie. I've always secretly wanted to be an author (or not so secretly--I've started 8 other blogs). This is my space to practice. It's not all great. It doesn't all make sense. But I'm doing it anyways. I'm happy you're here. :)
