31. No Answer

Let’s jump right in. I scheduled myself a massage because self-care. We start back at school next week and I know my body needs some relaxing. 😉

Story #1 Continues…

Noah tried calling Tim. No answer.

He tried again and nothing. Shit.

He decided the best thing to do would be to head towards Alec and Beth’s place. Maybe Tim had a change of heart and turned around. Which he would have seen, but…he didn’t have any idea what else to do. Was it too extreme to call the police?

Noah dusted off his jeans and headed North. He wasn’t far off, so it only took ten minutes to walk. He saw in the distance Alec on the porch, pacing back and forth with his phone in his hands.

Alec tried to call Beth again. It rang a few times, but she still didn’t pick up. His annoyance had been turning to worry turning to frustration turning to anger. Why hadn’t Beth just rode home with Anna? This year had been hard enough without having to worry about Beth making it home safely.

Alec knew the kinds of things that could happen in this town. Hadn’t there just been that girl from the high school found roughed up after she had skipped class? But Beth wouldn’t listen. She had her own ideas. She wanted to change things, but things weren’t changed yet.

Suddenly he remembered. Tim Busey.

He was the kid in the high school. One of the ones his dad had told him about in that terrible story. He was good friends with the Gundersons. Both of their families were pretty tight. Tim was the one who had retaliated later in the week.

At least Papa George said it was him. It was never proven.

This was the guy driving Beth to a hospital. Oh hell no.

Alec decided it was time to give his dad a call. He might not have the number and he might have to end up talking to his mom, but he couldn’t just stand there. He had to do something.

Noah got closer and saw Alec in a near panic talking with someone on his phone. Noah tried to remember why he was friends with Tim in the first place. Was he always this rash? There had been that time at the high school when he had taken things too far, and maybe this was another reoccurrence. Tim had recently been thrown in jail for drunk driving, but that was different.

Noah tried Tim’s cell again. No answer. Shit.

As Noah finally reached the end of the drive, he caught Alec’s worried look. Was there also some anger there? Towards him? Honestly, Noah was angry at himself now. Why did he get out of the truck? He could have just turned around to help Beth there.

About Amanda R. DeWitt

I'm a teacher, cat mom, wife to a bearded gentleman, and coffee junkie. I've always secretly wanted to be an author (or not so secretly--I've started 8 other blogs). This is my space to practice. It's not all great. It doesn't all make sense. But I'm doing it anyways. I'm happy you're here. :)
