24. A Visceral Reaction

I had a busy day today. Which is surprising because during this quarantine, I have felt anything but busy.

But alas a busy one it was. I went to school to look at my classroom and try to figure out how to space kids far enough apart to prevent further spread of the pandemic virus that has rocked our worlds. It was overwhelming to say the least.

Now I’m home, have had dinner and took a Benadryl. Maybe for allergies and maybe because I know it will help me get to sleep.

Since sleep is coming, I decided to start a timer and get some writing done so I don’t lose my streak. I picked a prompt from the NaNoWriMo writing camp.

Writing prompt: Write a scene where a character has a visceral reaction to something — they feel it in their body.

Beth nearly fell off her perch in the back with the force of the sudden u-turn and yelped in pain as her ankle tumbled around. Beth shouted, almost pleaded, “No, my house is up the hill!”

“Yeah I know.” replied Tim.

Beth felt her stomach drop. Like when she got nervous to give a talk in front of her colleagues. Like when she was standing in front of the school board defending her right to share books in her classroom from all kinds of backgrounds. She actually thought she could vomit.

But also she was angry. What the hell was he talking about, “I know”?? Beth wanted to get home and there was no way the opposite direction was a shortcut. He seemed like the type of man who would just assume that he knew best for her, the woman.

What was happening? Was he trying to take her to a hospital? Beth thought of the cost of an ER visit. Then she tried to remember if there actually was a hospital close by with an ER. An urgent care maybe.

Tim’s blue eyes narrowed as he concentrated.

Beth saw Noah’s eyes and he turned to look at Tim with bewilderment. He had braced himself against the car door and mid console to steady himself during the turn and his hands were still there, as if frozen.

“Where are we going!?” Beth shrieked half in anger, half in pain.

I might fall asleep on my keyboard, but I wrote something today! Something is better than nothing. 😉 (weird to wink at you, reader, but I’m in a weird sleepy mood)

About Amanda R. DeWitt

I'm a teacher, cat mom, wife to a bearded gentleman, and coffee junkie. I've always secretly wanted to be an author (or not so secretly--I've started 8 other blogs). This is my space to practice. It's not all great. It doesn't all make sense. But I'm doing it anyways. I'm happy you're here. :)
